I think my request is pretty simple, but I don't know the first thing about CSS, so maybe not.  I want to do two things:

1. Add a web counter (I use site meter).  I'd done it on my old layout by creating layers, but without layout specific instructions in the FAQ, I can't figure it out on my own.

2.  Add a free text box (I think the instructions on this were given in a previous entry, I'll go back and check).

If I could get those two things added, this will be my favorite layout ever.

Thanks in advance.

i'll answer about the free text box first because it's easier: the layout now has a sticky post option, read about it here.

i believe the sticky post is currently limited to plain text, and i'm not sure where on the page it will go, so you'll have to try for yourself as i haven't tried this option yet. however, if you want to place the text somewhere on the sidebar (as well as re-order the elements on the sidebar(s)), refer to this thread for a step-by-step guide.

this will also work for adding a counter to the sidebar. pick a location for the counter, for a specific example, i'll use the location just below the "Powered by Livejournal.com" line.

in the page where you're editing your layout code, find the function print_module_poweredby() on the menu on the left and click on it. the main editing window will jump to a chunk of code for that function. within that function, just below the line that says server_sig();, above the line close_module(); add 1 line with 3 quotation marks ("""), then 1 line with 3 quotation marks followed by a semi-colon (""";). between those 2 lines is where you can put the html code for the counter. (alternately you can also find the right spot for the counter html by copying the content of the editing window to notepad and find server_sig(); using CTRL-F, edit the code there, then paste it back into the editing window--it's a matter of preference, whichever method you're more comfortable with.)

remember to change the base theme to the theme of your choice by refering to the list (there's a quick guide for that in the thread i've linked), and also, if you use something other than the default 2 column layout with content on the left, find the line set layout_type = "2CL"; and replace the "2CL" with:

3CL for Three Column (Content on left)
3CM for Three column (Content in middle)
2CR for Two column(Sidebar on Right)
2CL for Two column(Sidebar on Left)

and here's a "bonus" tip, just for fun: removing the line server_sig(); completely will remove the Powered by Livejournal.com line from the sidebar. and you can add as much HTML as you like between the two lines """ and """;, for example, i removed the "Powered by Livejournal.com" and replaced it with "Powered by Caffeine", it's more accurate/appropriate, lol!

i hope that helped. using the code this way will also allow you to customize the layout much further than the options currently available on the basic customization page. have fun, and feel free to ask questions =)

Okay, I got the site meter in, but now I have no playful martini theme. Any ideas.

yup. i did warn you about that: remember to change the base theme to the theme of your choice by refering to the list. specifically:

find the line set base_theme = and replace the stuff in the quotation marks with unity-playful-martini (leave the quotation marks intact!)

Ah, I just didn't have unity in there. I just had "playful-martini." All fixed now. Thanks!
