Changing LJ Userhead Icons

  • Jul. 11th, 2010 at 7:53 PM
I tried to change my little LJ userhead icons with code I copied and pasted from this comm, but I apparently did something wrong. What I want to do is change the userinfo.gif, community.gif, and openid-profile.gif to 3 new userheads (the userinfo.gif will be different from the community.gif and so forth). When I paste the code into the Custom CSS window, all 3 userheads change, but they change to the same image instead of being different from each other.

This is the code I copied (edited to add my pics):

.ljuser img {
width: 0;
height: 0;
background-repeat: no-repeat;
background-color:transparent;
/* so that IE users will still see an image */
background-image: url(http://pics.livejournal.com/the_other_sandy/pic/0000942k);
padding: 20px 20px 0 0px !important;
}

.ljuser img[src="http://p-stat.livejournal.com/img/userinfo.gif"] {
background-color:transparent;
background-image: url(http://pics.livejournal.com/the_other_sandy/pic/0000942k);
padding: 20px 20px 0 0px !important;
}

.ljuser img[src="http://p-stat.livejournal.com/img/community.gif"] {
background-color:transparent;
background-image: url(http://pics.livejournal.com/the_other_sandy/pic/0000ayr5);
padding: 20px 20px 0 0px !important;
}

.ljuser img[src="http://p-stat.livejournal.com/img/openid-profile.gif"] {
background-color:transparent;
background-image: url(http://pics.livejournal.com/the_other_sandy/pic/00008r98);
padding: 20px 20px 0 0px !important;
}

Did I copy too much or not enough of the original code? The original poster wanted to do a couple of other things that I didn't, so I tried to only copy the relevant parts. I guess I missed something.

ETA: Solved! Thanks to xyndarella for recommending the LJ Tiny Icon Generator.

Well, one problem is that the images aren't being server by p-stat anymore; it's now l-stat.livejournal.com, so changing that in your CSS will help.

Grr. Every tutorial I read (and I read a lot of them) said be sure to use p-stat.

I guess my next question is if I ever need to know which [whatever]-stat to use for baldymen again, where would I look that up?

The l-stat and p-stat both referred to different content provider networks LJ was using for static content like user icons, etc. The letters stand for Limelight and Panther, respectively. For a while, LJ was using Panther, but after a lot of problems with user icons displaying wrong, they finally switched to Limelight. I'm not surprised that many tutorials were just never updated.
The easy way to tell the path for an image? Just view the page source (or use something like Firebug) and look for "userinfo.gif". The img tag will look something like this:

<img src="http://l-stat.livejournal.com/img/userinfo.gif" alt="[info]" width="17" height="17" ... />

Thanks! I was finally able to get the location of the last userhead I needed to change.
