Previous Entry | Next Entry

This problem has been with me for a while now: I have two counters, one visible, one invisible, in the custom text box in my sidebar. On the Recent Entries page the counter that is visible displays exactly the way I want it to. On individual Entry pages like this one and on my Friend's pages there are huge yawning spaces above and below the visible counter (confined to the custom text box, it seems) that I cannot get rid of.

It seems the invisible counter is gaining padding and margins on those pages but why that is so I simply cannot fathom.

Here's my CSS to style the custom text box:

/* Free Text Widget */

.customtext-widget {margin-top: 20px !important; margin-bottom: 20px;}
.customtext-widget .widget-content {padding-right: 5px; line-height: 1.6em !important;
font-size: 1.1em;}

/* The following styles the image links */

.customtext-widget a:hover {color: #fff;}
.customtext-widget a img {display: block; position: static; margin-top: -10px !important;
padding: 0 !important;
font-size: 0 !important; background: #fff !important; color: #fff !important;}
.customtext-widget a {font-weight: none; background: #fff color: #fff;}

What am I doing wrong? Any suggestions?

What am I doing wrong?

This:
.lj-view-friends br, .lj-view-entry br {margin-bottom: 1em !important;}

Well, maybe not "wrong," but I have no idea why that's there.

Nuh-uh. No way.

Removed all the code for "br" and the gaps got bigger. Put the code back in and modified it to only apply to the #alpha-inner .asset portion of the style sheet, and it made no difference. I hereby rule out the break tag as our [un]usual suspect.

I have no idea why that's there.

*clears throat*

Ahem. It's to format my poetry.

And my Friends pages. My friends are beasts, especially in the communities, when it comes to pressing down on the space bar too many times when all they need to do is press down on it once to create the next paragraph. I want to send my Friends to some sort of CSS Purgatory where they fix all the stuff they mess up on my Friends pages with their wonky HTML. That'll show'm...won't it?

Any other ideas? I'm about to rip the entire style sheet down if I don't find an answer to this.

.lj-view-friends .customtext-widget br,
.lj-view-entry .customtext-widget br {margin-bottom: 0 !important;}

When I said above about my friends "pressing down on the space bar" I meant "pressing down on the Enter key" but I'm sure you knew that and for what it's worth, my friends probably press down on the space bar too much, too. :)

I fixed the space problem without the code above, but thanks anyway. Turns out there was something like 100,000 break tags in my custom text box (well, there was four of them, which is way too many) so I removed all the superfluous ones, changed the margin-top on the custom text box image links from -10px to 0px (I had probably negated that margin to make up for all the break tags I had) and the gaps just dissappeared. Yay.

Yeah, I was going to suggest removing the break tags as well, just in case you didn't like my other idea.
