RSS feed in the sidebar

  • May. 14th, 2008 at 2:01 PM
Is there a way to use the custom box in the sidebar to display the headlines from an rss feed?  I'd like there to be links to my other blog's most recent posts in the sidebar of my LJ, but I'm not sure what HTML to use, or if it's even possible.  Everything I've come across uses PHP or scripts of some kind, and I was under the impression those wouldn't work.

Thanks!

Do you have links to any of these scripts or other examples? I must admit to being not all that knowledgeable on RSS matters.

Well, you can see it in action at http://polkadotcreations.wordpress.com/ and at http://polkadotcreations.blogspot.com/ but in both cases, those are widgets that are available to add to the sidebars and I can't see the actual code.

I did just find this flash-based widget: http://www.yourminis.com/minis/yourminis/yourminis/mini:rsscontainer but I'm getting an "Invalid video URL" error when I try to use it.

I did a bit of poking around, but it seems that all the feed aggregators use either JavaScript, Flash, or PHP and are designed for WordPress. As it says in the FAQs, JavaScript and Flash are not allowed on LiveJournal, and I doubt there's a way to set up a PHP widget.

That's too bad! Thanks for checking on it anyway :-)

The JavaScript/Flash prohibition applies to everything. I know there's at least one Twitter widget out there that works on LJ because it uses DHTML or something, if that's what you mean. Or was it something else?
