Placement of Userpics/Icons

  • Mar. 13th, 2008 at 10:58 AM
In an entry as viewed from the 'Journal' page, I'd like to move the default placement of the Userpic/Icon to the bottom left-hand corner, as opposed to the top left-hand corner.

Can this be done with CSS -- or will it require doing Advanced Customization (shudder)?

Well, you can float it to the right easily enough, but changing the vertical position will require a theme layer change.

Well, you've helped out the Rose Festival before (!!!) for our Story Blog with theme layer changes, so I certainly trust you to help us again!

Bring on the layer changes...

Yes, I remember you. ;) Can I assume that by "bottom left", you mean bottom-aligned with the "Leave comment/Edit Entry/Edit tags/etc." link bar?

Actually, I'd ideally like it to remain in the entry body. Is that possible?

Otherwise, with the meta links is cool, too...

Thanks, again! (You know I think you rock!)

Hmmm... I'm starting to think this may not be possible. Even if you try to put a big margin at the top of .user-icon the text won't flow above the float. When you try to move the icon to after the entry text, the top of the float comes after the last line of text and won't move up. It seems to be a CSS limitation, not something unique to LJ/Expressive.

I played with something similar here, but the only way to get the right effect is to embed the float somewhere in the middle of the flowed text, but you can't split the entry text in LJ, and there's no way to predict accurately where the float will fall.

Mike, I'd be good with that. I can totally see the problems otherwise, so it's not worth messing with.

I've got this blog live now (and it's linked by other blogs), so I'd love to get it fixed the way I need to.

Well, that's the same problem: You can't "bottom-align" a floated graphic, apparently. If you move the user icon next to the link bar, the icon extends below the bottom of the entry. The closest I can get is next to the metadata (mood, music, etc.), but it still leaves a big margin next to the icon, whether it's on the left or right.

It's cool. I don't really NEED to do this, it was just something I wanted to try...

Thanks (as always) for your time and effort!

Hey, if people didn't ask about these things, I wouldn't think to try them, and thus know what can and can't be done.
